Denizli to Dinar

Description

The line from Goncali to Dinar was built by the ORC in 1889, much later the rest of the ORC network. This is in part the consequence of the technical difficulties presented by this line. Goncali is at the bottom of the valley of the Buyuk Menderes, at an altitude of 210m, much lower that the surrounding Anatolian plateau which is roughly 900m high in this area.

The engineers chose to follow the Büyük Menderes valley which presents the easiest gradient going to Dinar. The first 10 km to Böceli are climbing 90m to 300m, an average of 0,9%. Right after Böceli, the line gets a little bit steeper to reach 450m in Kocabaş and then 540m in Kaklik, i.e an average ramp of 1,1%. From Kaklik, the climbs gets much more difficult until Bozkurt where 860m. altitude is reached. This is an average climb of 1,7% on this 19km section. From there, the line is almost completely flat for the remaining 74km to Dinar.

After Çardak, the line has to find a narrow path between the Acıgol lake and a ridge. After that point, the line goes straight to Sütlaç. Then it makes a broad 90° curve to the east and reaches Dinar fairly easily.
