44079 is preserved at the Darmsdadt Kranichstein Museum (Germany). This engine, formely KPEV Münster 4981, arrived in Turkey in 1916 as war supplies. It was acquired back by the German in 1987. It was restored in its original KPEV state and livery and given the number "Mainz 4981". This engine was built by Hanomag in 1913.
History
The Turkish G8 have a very complicated history and not all the records are available to trace back every unit:
- 44001 to 44046 (46 units) have been supplied during WW1 to the CFOA as part of the war supplies send to the Ottomans Empire by the German.
- 44047 to 44056 (10 units) are former SCP engines. They were acquired new by the SCP in 1924 from Linke Hoffman.
- 44057 to 44061 (5 units) have been purchased second hand in 1944 by TCDD from DHP (Damas Hama et Prolongement). These engines are part of the 71 G8 taken by France after WWI as repair after the armistice of 1918 (also known as SNCF 040C). In 1939, 48 units are sold to the DHP , which at that time was still under French control. Despite WWII, they were all delivered to DHP by 1941. It is quite possible that TCDD acquired more that 5 engines from DHP.
- Some engines in the 44061 to 44083 series must have been acquired through the various companies linked to the dismemberment of the Baghdad Railways (Cenup, Société d'exploitation des Chemins de Fer Bozanti Alep Nissibine, Chemins de fer de Cilicie Nord Syrie). Most of these engines were again war supplies send to the Baghdad Railway during World War 1.
- It is possible that TCDD acquired 13 engines from the Alsace Lorraine company (AL). These engines were again former KPEV taken over in 1919 as war compensation. The AL disposed all of its 13 G8 in 1934.
Engine number 44087 has been spotted and is reported by some authors but we cannot confirm its existence.

The mystery of TCDD's G8
Origin of the Turkish G8 is one of the least known subject regarding TCDD. Out of 83 units, only 21 can be fully traced. The other units have their history blurred by the WW1 and its consequences.

DHP G8 engines
List of 58 G8 taken over in 1919 by France as war compensation and allocated to the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer de L'Est (Est) and to the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Nord (Nord). This engines were there then incorporated into SNCF. Subsequently, 48 of these engines were sold to the DHP in 1939. At least 5 of these engines ended in Turkey either during or shortly after World War 2 (Various sources, for example Middle East Railways, Hugh Hughes, 1981).
