Izmir Hilal

Hilal is the famous level crossing between the tracks from Izmir Basmane and Izmir Alsancak stations, with a triangle to allow direct running from Basmane to Alsancak (see diagram below).

The electrification works in 2002 implied a new distribution of traffic between Basmane and Alsancak where Alsancak takes over most of the suburban trains. In addition, the third track between Basmane and Halkapinar? was removed to make room for the elevated metro line built in that place.

Track plan in Hilal was modified accordingly. The direct cord between Basmane and Alsancak has been moved and was not electified. The direct cord between Alsancak and Halkapınar, and Kemer and Halkapınar have double tracked and electrified.

Hilal station is closed and fenced, a new and more convenient metro station being available in the same location instead.

As of 2010, Tower B, formerly controlling the level crossing, was still standing in place. The tower is now squeezed between the elevated metro line, pedestrians overhead pass and some highway bridges.
