21 to 25

  • DMU-1
  • Quantity built: 5
  • First year: 1935
  • Power: 120 HP
  • Manufacturer: MAN

This is another batch of very early diesel railcars, but this time based on German technology. These  units are part of a range of diesel railcars developed by MAN for the German railways and other export customers. The design is typical of that time with a lot of element inspired from road truck.

The motor unit has a driving cab at each end. These railcars were used until the mid 1980's, perhaps as late as 1989 when the RM3000 Schienenbus arrived to replace them!

The unit has a second class and a third class compartment. The class can be recognized by large class numbers on the compartments doors. The third class was very spartan space with wood bench only. The unit capacity of 35 in third class is based on two passengers per bench but the benches look capable of sitting three of even four persons. There is provision for standing passenger as well (leather straps in the roof). So it is quite possible that up to 50 / 60 passengers could be crammed in 3rd class.

At least, these units have large windows which can open very low (safety was not an issue in those days). The bench are perfectly placed next to the windows giving a perfect view of the scenery. We know that these units were red and beige, at least at the end of their lives

Along with the railcars, TCDD ordered also 5 trailers. These trailers were numbered 5031 to 5035 and were delivered in 1938. The trailers had no driving cab. These railcars were often used with the MV5100.
